2012 brings a new year and some exciting collaborative projects!  Healthy Childcare Consultants, Inc. is working with the JCCEO Head Start Center of Excellence in Alabama, one of ten Centers awarded in the U.S.  Dr. Charlotte Hendricks is Coordinator for this five-year project, which includes the Alabama Early Childhood Leadership Academy.  For information on this important project please visit http://jcceocenterofexcellence.org/

Also, Dr. Hendricks has been elected to a 3-year term on the Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA) Editorial Committee.

We have scheduled several training events.  Dr. Hendricks will be presenting at the Region IV Head Start Conference, February 7-8, in Atlanta.  Topics include "Effective Strategies for training staff and families about Health and Safety" and "Effective Community Assessments."

In April, Dr. Hendricks and others from the JCCEO Center of Excellence will be presenting at the National Head Start Association Annual Conference in Nashville, TN.  Topics included "Happy Children:  Nurturing through Ages and Stages."

Also in April, Dr. Charlotte Hendricks will present a full-day workshop on "Oral Health" for the Alabama Head Start Association.

One way to access current resources is to plug into a national network of peers in your specialty area.  Through listserves, you can share ideas, explore current issues, and correspond with people who share your concerns.  Check with state and regional professional organizations as well as national agencies to find open listserves.  For example, T/TAS.org has a health, safety, and nutrition listserve.  Some organizations, such as the HealthyChildren.org, have FaceBook and twitter connections.  Many organzations, such as Healthy Child Care America, Safe Kids USA, and AAP DisasterReady publish newsletters.  For links to these and other online resources, visit our Links page.

The 3rd edition of Caring for Our Children health and safety guidelines was released in June 2011.  We are updating our Training Modules to include any revisions in information.  To access these guidelines, visit www.nrckids.org.

Training modules are research based and address national recommendations including AAP's Caring for Our Children and Head Start Performance Standards.  Resources are available in either English or Spanish.  For more information click here.

February is Dental Health Month

All teeth are important and proper oral hygiene begins at birth! The role of caregivers in children’s oral health includes skill building, habit forming, education, modeling, and parent education. During this training, participants will learn appropriate ways to clean the teeth and gums of infants, toddlers, and young children; practice fun activities to promote children’s dental hygiene; discuss procedures that may occur during a dental visit and how to prepare children; and learn ways to prevent oral injuries and dental first aid. Content also includes requirements, and recommendations for dental care; storage and care of toothbrushes; teething care, fluoride and sealants, and dental health and nutrition.
