Sun Safety in Early Child Care and Education Settings

Fresh air, sunshine, and exercise are essential to the healthy development of young children.  Children who regularly spend time running, jumping, and playing outdoors are generally more fit and have a lower risk of being overweight.  Adults should encourage children to be outside, moving, and safe -- including sun-safe!

The purpose of this training module is to make teachers and child caregivers aware of the importance of sun safety, and to help them identify ways to incorporate sun-safe actions in early child care and education programs.

This module is comprehensive for children, parents, and staff.  It includes not only the staff training Powerpoint, but also instructions for children's activities and parent mini-posters and newsletters (based on the HIP on Health series).

This module was developed in collaboration with the Sun Safety Alliance, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to the task of reducing the incidence of skin cancer in America.  Additional resources can be found at The Sun Safety Alliance website.

Module available in English and Spanish.  Please contact
Dr. Charlotte Hendricks for further information.

At the end of the session, the participants will be able to:
  • State the importance of sun safety for all individuals, and especially young children.
  • List sun safe behaviors.
  • Describe ways to practice sun safety in the early education and care setting.
  • Demonstrate ways to teach children about sun safety.
  • Identify resources to inform families about sun safety.

Content includes:

On average, children get three times more sun exposure than adults and are at risk for lifelong damage.  Recommendations for sun-safe actions include avoiding peak hours, seeking shade, wearing hats and cover-up clothing, wearing sunglasses, and using sunscreen.  Content also addresses prevention of dehydration, heat-related illness, and burns.  Protect children and teach lifelong habit by integrating sun safety in daily activities all year long.

Safe Fun In the Sun Safety Booklet!

Outdoor activity provides the fresh air and exercise that is important for children's health.  However, too much sun can lead to painful burns, eye damage, and skin cancer.  Help prevent these problems by teaching children to be sun safe.  Have fun talking with your children and following the sun safe suggestions in this booklet.
