Transportation
Safety
Safety when transporting children
requires extensive planning, preparation, and training, as
reflected in the new Head Start transportation regulations.
Childcare providers should have written policies and procedures
regarding issues such as when, why, and how children are
transported; transportation regulations and recommendations;
authorization; supervision of children; driver qualifications;
and vehicle safety and maintenance. Staff and volunteers who
monitor children and assist with transportation need training on
safety issues such as loading/unloading the vehicle,
buckling-up, adult supervision, and preparation for emergencies.
