Child Safety and Injury
Prevention
Indoor Safety:
Serious injuries can occur in child care setting (home- or
center-based) or in the child's own home. Most indoor
injuries can be prevented by recognizing and correcting
potential hazards. Explore why children are most often
injured, and identify hazards in children's environments
including hallways, floors, ceilings, doors, windows,
furniture, toys, restrooms, and storage areas. Explore
hazards associated with cribs and cots, art supplies, toys,
electricity, etc. Discuss preparation for and posting of
emergency information, and discuss ways to prevent injury.
Outdoor Safety:
Safe outdoor play, especially on playgrounds, is based on
four basic principles: Supervision, Age appropriate
equipment design, Fall surfacing, and Equipment and
surfacing maintenance. Participants became more aware of
hazards on both home and public playgrounds, and discussed
ways to prevent injury. Content includes the CPSC
Safety Guidelines, accessibility, and travel to/from play areas.
Emergency situations:
Are you prepared? Emergency situations are unexpected,
but you can be prepared. Situations may occur such as child
or adult injury or illness, natural disaster, fire or other
evacuation emergency, missing child, and potentially violent
situations. Preparation involves awareness of hazards,
development of clearly written procedures, and practice.
For example, a fire emergency can be frightening and very
different from the monthly fire drill. Participants
discussed ways to eliminate fire hazards, demonstrated what
to do in a fire emergency, and practiced fun developmentally
appropriate activities to teach young children about
prevention and response to emergencies.
