 Oral Health and Young Children
All teeth are
important and proper oral hygiene begins at birth! The role of
caregivers in children’s oral health includes skill building,
habit forming, education, modeling, and parent education. During
this training, participants will learn appropriate ways to clean
the teeth and gums of infants, toddlers, and young children;
practice fun activities to promote children’s dental hygiene;
discuss procedures that may occur during a dental visit and how
to prepare children; and learn ways to prevent oral injuries and
dental first aid. Content also includes requirements, and
recommendations for dental care; storage and care of
toothbrushes; teething care, fluoride and sealants, and dental
health and nutrition.

At the end of the
session, the participants will be able to:
- State the importance of
teeth, including baby teeth.
- Demonstrate appropriate
ways to clean the teeth and gums of infants, toddlers, and
young children.
- List procedures that may
occur during a dental visit.
- State ways to prevent oral
injuries and discuss first aid for injury.

Content includes:
Role of dental health
in childcare; Tooth and gum care for infants,
toddlers, and preschoolers; Teething; Prevention of
dental problems, including baby bottle decay;
Prevention and treatment of dental injuries;
Fluoride; Sealants; Choosing and visiting a dentist.
