Emergency Situation in Early Care
and Education Settings

Help staff identify and prepare for emergencies that can occur in childcare programs. Describe situations involving child or adult injury or illness, natural disaster, evacuation emergency, missing child, and potentially violent situations, and discuss recommended responses by teachers or other caregivers. Content includes the importance of written policy and procedures, training needs, and practice; authorization and documentation; files and emergency information; parent and community involvement; and appropriate ways to educate children.

At the end of th
e session, the participants will be able to:
  • Identify emergency situations that may occur in child care programs;
  • Identify appropriate responses to specific emergency situations;
  • Discuss the need to follow policy/procedure for specific situations;
  • Identify ways to involve parents; and,
  • Identify ways to educate children without frightening them.

Head Start Performance Standards and NAEYC Accreditation Criteria; Emergency situations including child injury or illness, adult injury or illness, natural disasters, evacuation emergencies, lost child, and potentially violent situations; Importance of written policy and procedures, training needs, and practice; Description of possible situations and recommended responses by teachers or other caregivers; Authorization and documentation; Training; Files and emergency information; Parent and community involvement; Educating children.
